George Elliott
He never set out to be a DJ he kinda fell into it. At school George wanted to be a journalist and it was this ambition that indirectly set him on his path to where he is today.
In 1991 media studies teacher Mr Williams encouraged George to find out more about Newfest FM – an RSL radio station running in Newcastle for 1 week in July 1991 to promote a festival in the city. Mr Williams thought that 2 weeks of training and a week of broadcasting 12 hours a day was bound to offer him a fantastic opportunity to gain some journalistic experience.
What actually happened was he met some fantastic people and ended up presenting a show everyday that week. George decided radio was not for him. As much as he enjoyed the week, he still wanted to follow a career in journalism.
In August 1991 one of the other presenters on Newfest FM – Brian Collins asked George if he would be able to cover a shift DJing in a bar in Newcastle. Armed with a hand full of records and a £5 pair of headphones from Tandy he set off to work his first night at The Half Moon in Newcastle’s infamous Bigg Market.
He was greeted by the manager Martin Campbell with the following statement Puts 3 ice cubes on the bar and says “Everytime you play a crap song, I am going to throw one of these ice cubes at you and if I throw all three you will never work here again!”
At the end of the night George and Martin stood chatting next to the puddle of un-thrown melted ice cubes about the night. Martin was so impressed with him that he offered George 4 nights at one of his other bars City Vaults. This is where he met Mick Wilson, a manager that he would work with for many years to come.
George went with Mick when he took over the Half Moon in 1992 and then in 1994 Mick took George to his new bar The Groat House where George was to build himself a fantastic reputation.
Since then George has worked in many of the top venues in the North East including Legends (1996-2003), Tuxedo Princess (2000 – 2001) Planet Earth (2001) Sea Nightclub and Blu Bambu (2004 – 2007) in Newcastle plus Coyote Wild, Chase, Escape and Dusk in South Shields. Beach, Chase and Blu Bambu in Sunderland as well as many others.
In February 2006 George was asked to provide a guest mix for the Floorfillers Show on Metro Radio by the show’s presenter Wayne Tunniclife. The response to the mix was so positive Wayne asked George to do another and before long this became a weekly feature of the show. As George started spending more time in the studio he started learning how it all worked and spent months practicing. December 2006 and George was asked to cover his first live show Friday Night Live. George went on to present Floorfillers Extra on Metro Radio every week as well as covering other shows on the station.
You can currently see George Every Saturday at Liquid/Envy Newcastle.
